FEVER CITY, TIM BAKER'S EXHILARATING DEBUT THRILLER NOMINATED FOR 2017 SHAMUS AWARD.

Critically acclaimed debut novel, FEVER CITY, by Tim Baker (UK, Faber & Faber; US, Europa) has been shortlisted for the Private Eye Writers of America (PWA) 2017 Shamus Awards, in the ‘Best First Private Eye Novel’ category to be announced in September.

An extract of FEVER CITY was previously shortlisted, and ‘highly commended’ for the CWA Debut Dagger, and the published novel (UK, Faber 2016) was shortlisted for the CWA John Creasey dagger. The novel has also been published in Italy (Mondadori), and in Japan (Shogakukan).

FEVER CITY is a searing counter-factual conspiracy thriller with three intertwining narratives. Nick Alston, a Los Angeles private investigator, is hired to find the kidnapped son of America's richest and most hated man; Hastings, a gun-for-hire in search of redemption, is also linked to the case. But both men soon become ensnared by a sinister cabal that spreads from the White House all the way to Dealey Plaza and the assassination on JFK. Decades later in Dallas, Alston's son stumbles across evidence that might link his father to the shot heard round the world.

Faber will publish Tim’s next novel, CITY WITHOUT STARS, in January 2018

Praise for FEVER CITY:

‘[A] remarkable first novel …inspired writing, memorable characters and an exhilarating, all but overpowering story.’ – Patrick Anderson, Washington Post

‘Ambitious debut… a bare knuckle take… a noirish storm of corruption, violence and depravity…’ —The New York Times, USA

An inventive take on the great American conspiracy theory...’ —The Sunday Times, Crime Club Newsletter January Picks 2016

‘Sprawling, ambitious and atmospheric…this debut author is the natural successor to such hallowed crime writers as Raymond Chandler and James Ellroy.’—Stylist UK

'Tim Baker paints a lurid, sinister portrait of mid-century America, skilfully layering fact and fiction in a way that will forever change the way you think about the Kennedy assassination. An impressive debut.' – Peter Swanson

‘Another mighty impressive debut by a British author...Baker has the audacity to revisit the web of conspiracies surrounding the JFK assassination and despite the sterling previous contributions to the fictional subject by James Ellroy, Don De Lillo and even Stephen King, comes up trumps.’ – Maxim Jakubowski, LoveReading.com

‘Phenomenal. It's a brilliantly conceived and executed thriller that deftly combines smack-you-in-the-mouth intensity with imagery and prose to die for. It's beautifully stark, brutal when it needs to be, and thoroughly engrossing. There have been some truly great books written about the events surrounding the Kennedy assassination, and Fever City can stand with any of them.’ – Rob Reynolds, author of THE DARK INSIDE

I KNOW WHERE SHE IS - debut thriller to Canelo

Editorial director Louise Cullen has acquired I KNOW WHERE SHE IS by SB Caves for Summer 2017 publication

I KNOW WHERE SHE IS features a mother whose child was abducted ten years earlier, and seems unlikely to ever be found until a mysterious young woman appears claiming that Francine’s daughter is being held captive. The chain of events that follows sees Francine face her worst nightmares and do things she never thought herself capable of in a quest to find her child.

Cullen said: 'SB Caves’ novel grabbed me from the first page and did not let go. I read much of it on the edge of my seat and raced through to the breathless finale. This novel has pace, tension, action aplenty and is an unsettling exploration of a dark side of human nature. Most of all, it is about a mother who will do whatever it takes to save her child.'

Caves said: 'I'm delighted that Canelo have faith in my writing and I'm really looking forward to working with them.'

The author is currently working on his second novel, a UK based thriller.

Debut 'moral thriller' BLOODY JANUARY to Canongate at auction...and more!

Alan Parks' phenomenal debut, BLOODY JANUARY, which Francis Bickmore at Canongate won at auction (from agent Tom Witcomb), swept up a host of fantastic rights deals at London Book Fair 2017. Michael Reynolds at Europa will publish in the US as a lead title for their crime-list relaunch.

There has also been an auction for Czech rights (Euromedia), with Slovak (Ikar) & Turkish (Nemesis) rights sold. Payot Rivages pre-empted for French rights before the fair. And after a very positive fair – more to come!

Described as a ‘moral thriller’, the first in a new crime series set in Glasgow is Tartan Noir at its best, for fans of Ian Rankin, Louise Welsh, and William McIlvanney’s LAIDLAW trilogy. John Niven, author of KILL YOUR FRIENDS, described the book as: ‘A brilliant debut. Taut, violent and as close as you'll get to 1970s Glasgow without a Tardis. Parks is a natural successor to William McIIvanney.’

18-year-old Tommy Malone shoots a young woman dead on a busy Glasgow street, and then commits suicide, hard-drinking, salt-of-the-earth cop, Harry McCoy knows it can’t be a random act of violence. With a new partner in tow, McCoy uses his underworld network to build a picture of a secret society run by Glasgow’s wealthiest family. The son, Teddy, drugged young Tommy, and convinced him it was his God-given task to kill the woman. Drugs, sex, incest; every nefarious predilection is catered for, at the expense of the lower echelon of society, an underclass that includes McCoy’s best friend — drug-Tsar Stevie Cooper — and his on-off girlfriend, a prostitute, Janey. But with McCoy’s boss, Murray, calling off the hounds, and Murray’s boss threatening to scupper the entire investigation, the Dunlops are apparently untouchable. McCoy has other ideas.

Faber snaps up Tim Baker’s stunning new thriller, CITY WITHOUT STARS

Ahead of the London Book Fair, Angus Cargill at Faber has acquired UK&BC ex. Can rights in Tim Baker’s epic crime thriller set in Mexico, CITY WITHOUT STARS. Faber also published his debut last year, the neo-noir conspiracy thriller, FEVER CITY.

Sharing the same landscape as THE CARTEL, 2666 and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, CITY WITHOUT STARS is a mesmerising crime thriller that combines the nightmarish violence of the War on Drugs with an occult world of dark powers and conspiracy. Across a fast, short-fuse narrative, Baker maneuvers different voices and perspectives as the action accelerates towards its shocking conclusions. The novel is brutal, and unflinching, but the most despairing acts are counterpoised with a rich humanity, dark swathes of humour and an unstinting faith in the redemptive power of human courage and decency.

Angus Cargill says : 'CITY WITHOUT STARS is a powerful, atmospheric, and artfully written Cartel novel about an epidemic of missing women in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Real. Set over five days, at the turn of the century, it is painfully relevant to today and confirms Tim as one of the most thoughtful and exciting new voices in international thriller writing.'

Tim Baker says: ‘I am thrilled to be continuing the adventure with Angus and his superb and supportive team at Faber, who have done everything possible to make me feel at home. Faber remain a reference for excellence and a perfect launch pad for such an ambitious book.’

Tom Witcomb says: ‘Tim is an absolute stylist and Faber is the perfect home for this epic work.  CITY WITHOUT STARS is an audacious, fast moving thriller and its themes of social injustice and the vulnerability of women are incredibly timely.’

FEVER CITY, Faber, 2016

Faber will publish in early Spring 2018.
