Bookouture Acquire Two New Romantic Comedies by Debut Author Drew Davies

Bookouture have acquired two new romantic comedies by Drew Davies from Hattie Grunewald. First up in November this year will be Drew’s hilarious and heart-warming THE SHAPE OF US, with a second title out in May 2019. The debut follows the interweaving lives of four love and luckless strangers as they navigate the peaks and pitfalls of finding romance in the bustling London metropolis.

World English Language rights were snapped up by Commissioning Editor Christina Demosthenous who said:

“I’m over the moon to be publishing Drew. THE SHAPE OF US is a very special book. It doesn’t matter how many times I read and re-read it, it just gets better – making me laugh, cry and sigh with pure joy every single time. I can’t wait for readers to experience its magic.”

Drew Davies said:

“Wow, this is happening. I’m being announced! Ma, look – they’re announcing me! Where was I? Oh yes, I’m absolutely over the moon to be joining Bookouture, I really am. The team’s drive and talent are unmistakeable. And Christina is my dream editor, working with her is such a pleasure – I’m so excited about launching my first two books with her and the team. Both novels will be romantic comedy – and yes, I promise they’re much funnier than the opening to this paragraph.”

Drew Davies was born in London and grew up in Whanganui, New Zealand. He attended the Unitec School of Performing Arts in Auckland and won a Playmarket New Zealand Young Playwright of the Year award in 2000. After a brief stint on a kiwi soap, he has worked in Search for the past 15 years. Drew’s other claim to fame is that Stephen Fry once called him droll. Either that, or he got his name wrong. He now lives in Wanstead, London.

NANCY TUCKER’S THAT WAS WHEN PEOPLE STARTED TO WORRY OUT NOW

In her new book THAT WAS WHEN PEOPLE STARTED TO WORRY, published in hardback and ebook by Icon Books, Nancy Tucker brings together the experiences of sixty young women aged 16-25 to present the wide scope of mental illness and the impact it has on everyday life. Nancy’s writing is frank, funny and compassionate, offering readers the opportunity to better understand what it is to live with an unwell mind. Nancy’s book is also out in audio with Audible UK.

‘In the waiting room, I see a lot of people who I could tell had real, serious Problems. They deserve to be here. I don’t. I’m a fraud. A lazy wreck seeking an excuse for her incompetence. I’m useless.’ Abby, 24

THAT WAS WHEN PEOPLE STARTED TO WORRY examines modern perceptions of mental illness, placing women’s lived experience at the centre of that narrative. Nancy encourages readers to examine their preconceptions of these conditions with tongue-in-cheek ‘guidebook’ sections, and throughout these chapters we hear Nancy’s own voice and experiences, creating a compelling and cohesive narrative.

Through these stories of women pushed to the very edge, Nancy reveals something universal about what it means to grow up a woman, and shines a light on perspectives recognisable for anyone who has been affected, directly or indirectly, by mental illness. The result is a book that is unique: in turns funny, disturbing and deeply moving; sensitively handled, and intimate without being

Nancy’s first book THE TIME IN BETWEEN (Icon Books, 2016) explored her own struggle with anorexia and bulimia nervosa. In the Sunday Times Christina Patterson praised the memoir as ‘astonishingly good’ and in The Psychologist Sara Gilbert wrote it was ‘an illustration of the complexity of an eating disorder.’

Nancy Tucker is a 22-year-old writer and student, currently studying for a degree in Experimental Psychology at Pembroke College, Oxford. Nancy’s first book, THE TIME IN BETWEEN (Icon, 2016), explored her own struggle with anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Nancy aspires to eventually apply her understanding of mental illness to a career in clinical psychology, and has a particular interest in the treatment of binge eating disorder and personality disorders.

You can read an extract from Nancy’s new book from The Observer here.

Praise for Nancy Tucker:

‘A startlingly affecting, starkly written account of her anorexia. This isn't just another anorexia misery memoir — it's a work of literature’ — Jacqueline Wilson

‘I found Tucker’s account of her illness clear-sighted, eye-opening, moving and wise.’ — The Bookseller

‘THE TIME IN BETWEEN is a tremendous achievement’ — New Statesman

‘THE TIME IN BETWEEN is stylish an incisive and Tucker weaves her tale of fear and food, confusion and calories grippingly and with skill.’ — Joanna Moorhead, The Guardian

‘A haunting first-person account of Tucker’s struggle with anorexia as a child… Her writing is distinctive, engaging and slightly spiky.’ — Helen Nianias, The Independent

EXQUISITE by Sarah Stovell shortlisted for CrimeFest 2018's eDUNNIT Award

Sarah Stovell’s darkly thrilling EXQUISITE has been shortlisted for the 2018 CrimeFest eDUNNIT Award, recognising the best ebooks in the crime genre. The novel follows the relationship between two women, a successful author and an aspiring writer, who meet at a writing retreat. What starts as a nurturing friendship soon becomes something more, and as infatuation turns to obsession things take a sinister and unexpected turn.

Bo Luxton has it all - a loving family, a beautiful home in the Lake District, and a clutch of bestselling books to her name.

Enter Alice Dark, an aspiring writer who is drifting through life, with a series of dead-end jobs and a freeloading boyfriend.

When they meet at a writers' retreat, the chemistry is instant, and a sinister relationship develops... Or does it?

Breathlessly pacey, taut and terrifying, EXQUISITE is a startlingly original and unbalancing psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page.

The winners will be announced at the CrimeFest Gala Awards Dinner hosted by Robert Thorogood, creator of DEATH IN PARADISE on Saturday 19th May.

Sarah Stovell was born in 1977 and spent most of her life in the Home Counties before a season working in a remote North Yorkshire youth hostel made her realise she was a northerner at heart. She now lives in Northumberland with her partner and two children and lectures in Creative Writing at Lincoln University.

She is the author of MOTHERNIGHT (Snowbooks, 2008) and THE NIGHT FLOWER (Tindal St Press, 2013).

Her first thriller novel, EXQUISITE, was published in June 2017.

Praise for EXQUISITE:

‘Satisfyingly complex. The prose is assured, the plot structure is tightly and effectively controlled, while the characterisation of the two protagonists is quite extraordinary. Tension oozes out of every page’ — The Lady

‘EXQUISITE is a powerful and assured debut thriller. Slickly claustrophobic and delicately wrought this arch story of obsessive forbidden love taken to the extreme will have you squirming in your seat even as you're driven to turn the next page. A must-read for 2017’ — Sarah Pinborough, author of BEHIND HER EYES

‘Cunningly constructed and gorgeously written, this is outstanding.’ – Sunday Express

Anbara will be on Woman’s Hour tomorrow morning speaking about the book, and will also be taking part in an event for Lush Book Club on 7th June with Sophie Mackintosh. You can also read more about the book and Anbara's writing process on the Foyle's blog.

When Bea Hanlon follows her preacher husband Max to a remote island in the Pacific, she soon sees that their mission will bring anything but salvation. For Advent Island is a place beyond the reaches of even her most fitful imaginings. It's not just the rats and the hordes of mosquitos and the weevils in the powdered milk. Past the confines of their stuffy little house, amidst the damp and the dust and the sweltering heat, rumours are spreading of devil chasers who roam the island on the hunt for evil spirits. And then there are the noises from the church at night.

Yet, to the amusement of the locals and the bafflement of her husband, Bea gradually adapts to life on the island. But with the dreadful events heralded by the arrival of an unexpected, wildly irritating and always-humming house guest, Advent Island becomes a hostile place once again. And before long, trapped in the jungle and in the growing fever of her husband's insanity, Bea finds herself fighting for her freedom, and for her life.

Anbara is half-Palestinian, half-Scottish, and grew up in London. After studying in Beirut and York, she graduated from Oxford with a PhD in Theology in 2014. She lives in Oxford with her partner where she works as an academic. THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL is her first novel.

Praise for THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL:

‘Very dark and mysterious and beguiling… beautifully written. It’s just transported me to a different world every night.’ — Dolly Alderton, author of EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT LOVE

'This book is so rich in detail, the rainforest so immersive, and the characters so wonderfully odd, that I was sucked into its dark beating heart and wasn't spat out until I'd turned the final page... I found Bea such an intriguing character - wily, and clever, but also an innocent, just trying to survive in extraordinary circumstances. I was also completely captivated by Salam's descriptions of the rain forest, and the houses, in fact all of the location, including the animals (and their droppings, cocoons, and larvae!) and the weather. All of it so immersive.' — Claire Fuller, author of OUR ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS

‘A darkly comic and thrilling novel… Literal escapism.’ — Marta Bausells, Elle magazine

‘A powerful, at times unnerving, look at a marriage in crisis, belief, and survival.’ — Sarah Shaffi, Stylist, ‘April’s Best New Books’

‘This is a debut novel that promises big things for its young author. Half-Scottish, half-Palestinian Salam spent six months living on a small South Pacific Island. Out of her experiences, she’s fashioned a richly-textured, vivid tale (you can practically taste the papayas and smell the jungle).’ — Alexandra Newson, The Upcoming, ‘13 Must Read Books for 2018’
